This week...

As part of our project 'Starry Night' we will be reading the story 'Kipper's Toybox' and then we will be creating our own sock cuddly toy using collage materials. We will also be reading 'The Shadow' and exploring shadow puppets. The children will learn about how shadows are made and also try to work out what the nocturnal animal is by looking at its shape.

Nocturnal Animal Shadow Matching - From ABCs to ACTs

The daily stories in Olive class are all nature themed and Jade class have animal based stories this week.

The children will be completing two dictated sentences. We are trying to build in the 1st set of tricky words into these sentences, so the children practise finding these words on the mat and then copying them. All children have had this in their bookbags so you can practise this at home too. The sentences we give the children to write are normally made up of cvc words or words containing the digraphs they know so that they can sound out the words for themselves. We remind them to do finger spaces, form their letters correctly and put a full stop at the end. The sentences are normally something like 'The cat is black.'  'I got a pen.' 'He is at the shop.'.'

The children will also continue with story scribing and acting these out. The adults are having to write less and less as the children are getting more confident with their phonics and writing skills which is brilliant to see.

In phonics the reception children are learning ea as an alternative for ee e.g. seal. The Year 1s are learning the ow as an oa sound e.g. goal, toad, and ow for the ou sound e.g cow town.

In maths we are learning about the number seven and the different parts that make up number 7 e.g. 3 + 4 = 7. We have looked at the 7 numberblock and learnt that there are 7 colours in a rainbow and 7 days in the week. We are continuing to look at how dots are arranged to make up patterns so we can easily tell what the number is without counting the dots because we know the make up of the numbers e.g. below is 3 as there are 1 + 1+ 1 and that makes 3 or there are 2 and 1 and that makes 3.

There is the subitising game on 1 minute maths - the more the children practise and recognise the patterns, the more confident they will become. You can download the app here https://whiteroseeducation.com/1-minute-maths

In RE the children will learn about the Hindu festival Holi and how this is celebrated. In RSHE the children will be thinking about perseverance even when things are difficult. In Dots this week, the children practised mindful eating.
